Coronavirus Update

Thursday, 12 March, 2020
10 Downing Street, Prime Minister and Chief Medical Officer

We are receiving regular briefings on this matter and I was in the chamber last night for the Secretary of State for Health's statement. There are no plans to close parliament and the whole House is working together on this matter.

The Prime Minister today progressed the UK’s Coronavirus response, meaning that there are a few changes to what we should do if we feel unwell.

The expert medical and scientific advice is that if you have either a ‘new continuous cough’ and/or a ‘high temperature’ you should stay at home and self-isolate for 7 days from when the symptoms started.

For most people, coronavirus will be a mild infection. The advice below is intended for people with symptoms of coronavirus including those with a diagnosis of the virus until they are well.

By following the above and below actions, it will help protect others in your community whilst you are infectious.

Plan ahead and ask for others for help so you can stay at home. You are welcome to get in touch with my office if necessary – Siobhan.baillie.mp@parliament.uk

Stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible and sleep alone if that is possible.

Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds – each time using soap and water.

Stay away from vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions as much as possible.

You Do NOT need to contact NHS 111 in this time unless your symptoms worsen and you feel you cannot cope at home. More detailed information is here:

Help if you need to self-isolate:

In the Budget yesterday, the Chancellor announced that changes have been made to both Statutory Sick Pay and Universal Credit to provide easier and quicker access to financial support throughout any self-isolation period. A hardship fund has also been created which will be available to local councils or those in the greatest need.

The main message from the Chancellor was that the NHS will have whatever resources and support they need to help us tackle and treat the virus.
